This month I am going to write a little about some useful free software and also some Windows 10 built in apps. Generally, the non windows programs have a paid version as well which has enhancements.

Malwarebytes. Although Windows has its own malware scanning software, sometimes a second opinion from a trusted source is useful. Free for home use, this is perfect for an extra layer of protection.

CCleaner. I have used this for years now. Similar to Malwarebytes, but aimed more towards system reliability and removing unwanted files from the system as well as browsers.

PickPic. This is a supercharged version of the windows snipping tool. Allows editing after the screen capture. Choose different layouts, windows or freeform.

7Zip. This a compression program that can both compress and decompress folders and files to make this smaller.

Recuva. This is a great tool if you accidently delete a file or photo and need to get it back. If you have lost something recently this tool will help you to get it back. It may also find things you forgot you had deleted!

Windows Remote Assistance. This comes built in to Windows 10. It allows you to have assistance remotely, or to give assistance to someone else. Obviously if someone you don’t know or trust asks you to remote it, you wouldn’t give them access or the code. No matter how convincing they might be.

Virtual Desktops. Does anyone need a second screen to work from? Windows 10 now comes with a Virtual Desktop function. You can enable this by pressing Windows + Tab at the same time, then selecting “New Desktop” from the top left. Once you are using your second, third etc desktop, you can flip between them by pressing Windows + Ctrl + Left or right arrow.

TreeSize. This is a fab tool for seeing what folders are taking up all your disk space. You can modify the contents directly from this program, but be careful as if you delete something important, you could break your system!
